Hoddinott Reserve playground in East Bairnsdale will be upgraded.

Contemporary and interactive play facilities, new seating amenities and landscaping will reinvigorate and enhance the tired reserve. By upgrading facilities within the reserve, it will allow for increased play opportunities and activities for the local community.

Components within the reserve will include a play space for 4 to 12 years of age, shade trees, soft landscaping, picnic facilities and seating throughout the reserve. There will be structured play equipment under the shade structure, and a less formal nature-based play area of logs and stepping activities included.

This project us supported by the Victoria State Government Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions through the 2023-24 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund - Community Facilities Stream, and East Gippsland Shire Council.

Drainage infrastructure is nearly complete, including subsoil drainage around the playground areas to improve long-term usability.

Playground equipment installation is well underway, with most structures now in place. The contractor is currently preparing and installing the rubberised softfall surface, with mulch to follow shortly.

⚠️ Additional equipment delay: New playground items that were ordered to replace equipment originally planned for reuse are expected to arrive in approximately 7 weeks. As a result, the shaded section of the playground will remain closed and fenced off until mid-July. We appreciate your understanding, as this delay is outside the contractor’s control.

Accessibility improvements: Concrete pads and path connections for the new accessible picnic seating have been completed; installation of the new furniture is scheduled for the coming week.

We thank everyone for extending patience and support as we work to deliver a fun, safe, and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.

The upgrade of the Hoddinott Reserve playground is in full swing, aiming to create a lively community area that combines fun and relaxation.

Progress is moving swiftly, with clearing and enhancements setting the stage for the new playground. Construction is actively taking place to provide a refreshed recreational space for everyone in the community.

This project, led by us and executed by the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation, will introduce a family-friendly playground featuring engaging equipment suitable for children aged 4 to 12. Families can also look forward to new seating options, making the reserve a more welcoming spot for play and relaxation.

The design has been shaped by community input, promoting active play and fostering social connections. Although we initially planned to keep some of the original play structures, they were deemed too worn out after evaluation. Consequently, we need to invest in all new playground equipment, focusing on what can be achieved within the available grant funding. Despite these changes, we are dedicated to creating a high-quality, enjoyable space for everyone.

Last week marked the start of work with the removal of outdated play structures. Crews are now focused on preparing the subgrade and installing drainage systems as the project progresses.

State Budget supports projects, ups levies, misses on roads

East Gippsland Shire Council has welcomed funding for facilities that benefit young people and families in the 2024 State Budget. However, the good news is tempered by increases in a range of levies and taxes, and an underinvestment in regional priorities including road maintenance and natural area management.

Mayor Cr Tom Crook said Council was still digging into the details of the State Budget, handed down on Tuesday, and how it will support East Gippsland communities in the longer term.

“As with developing our own draft budget – currently out for community feedback – we understand the Government’s attempts to be more fiscally disciplined. We are keen to understand the details of the budget and how that translates to on-the-ground, direct support and initiatives for East Gippsland,” Cr Crook said.

    Highlights for the region:

    • Paynesville Primary School - $4.4 million to modernise the school
    • Paynesville Bowls Club - $330,000 for a new synthetic green
    • Hoddinott Reserve, East Bairnsdale - $300,000 to upgrade the playground
    • Lakes Entrance - $4.5m to upgrade the training walls
    • Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust - a share of $13m for essential services and infrastructure upgrades

“These investments are good news for residents and families in Paynesville and East Bairnsdale, and some are for projects and investment Council has long advocated for. Improving facilities for people of all ages will encourage families to stay in, or move into, our region,” Cr Crook said.
