About the project

In 2017, a masterplan for a new play space was developed by Landscape Architects. The draft Playground Strategy recommends that diverse play areas are required throughout East Gippsland, and although Eastwood has plentiful open space, there is currently a deficiency of activity areas which cater to the growing population of families with young children, multi-generational ages and abilities.

The area for the play space is adjacent to Eastwood Shopping Centre and Lucknow Primary School, with an active pre-school and new kindergarten located nearby.

Objectives and scope

The objective of the project is to deliver the much-needed added amenity to the residents of Eastwood and greater Bairnsdale, by providing a community space for the residents of Eastwood to socialise - with picnic facilities, shelter, barbecues, an all-abilities play space, and an accessible toilet block.

Consultation and community engagement

Feedback on the concept plan was collated under key themes and has informed the final design. The responses are under Documents - Community Feedback to the right of screen.

Schedule

  • Civil works awarded to contractors. Construction program to be finalised once the contract has been awarded. Consultation with the school to ensure minimising disruption as much as possible.
  • Play items and landscaping to follow. This work will be undertaken by Council’s in-house crew. Installation schedule to be finalised once the civil works has been completed.

Funding

Funding for this project is provided by the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program [Phase 3].

Construction of the new toilet block at the Eastwood Playspace will commence in the coming days.

The playground will remain open while these works are being undertaken; although the playground will still be open, there will be construction fencing and increased vehicle movements in the area and we ask for children to be monitored and visitors to remain alert and avoid distractions.

The construction of a toilet block will be completed by the end of the financial year.

Contributing to creating a more enjoyable, safe, and inclusive recreational experience, a toilet block has been designed for construction at the new play space in Eastwood.

The new toilet block will include two disabled and family friendly units, providing a convenient and accessible facility for children and adults who may need to use the restroom while enjoying the playground. The inclusion of a toilet block will also allow families to spend longer periods at the playground, promoting physical activity and socialization.

The playground is progressing well. Stepping logs and balance logs are expected to be delivered and put in place in the coming weeks. Once the logs are installed, the soft fall materials will be laid, and garden areas completed. The basket swing and child swing seats will be installed following the placement of the soft fall materials.

The footpath connecting the car park to the play area has been completed and we will cleanup and backfill around the path over the next couple of days. Once a building permit is obtained, we will commence the construction of the BBQ shelter and furniture.

Have you seen us on site at the new Eastwood Play Space this week?

The concrete footpath has been poured around the area marked out for the play equipment and the project is progressing well. The concreting was done by Fox Martin Concrete and Construction on behalf of Friths Plumbing and Civil Construction, who were awarded the contract for the civil works and concrete package.

The connection to the carpark will be completed the first week of the September school holidays.

Our Council crew will work together with Adventure+ to install the play equipment in mid-late September. Landscaping will commence once the play equipment is in.
