About the project

In 2017, a masterplan for a new play space was developed by Landscape Architects. The draft Playground Strategy recommends that diverse play areas are required throughout East Gippsland, and although Eastwood has plentiful open space, there is currently a deficiency of activity areas which cater to the growing population of families with young children, multi-generational ages and abilities.

The area for the play space is adjacent to Eastwood Shopping Centre and Lucknow Primary School, with an active pre-school and new kindergarten located nearby.

Objectives and scope

The objective of the project is to deliver the much-needed added amenity to the residents of Eastwood and greater Bairnsdale, by providing a community space for the residents of Eastwood to socialise - with picnic facilities, shelter, barbecues, an all-abilities play space, and an accessible toilet block.

Consultation and community engagement

Feedback on the concept plan was collated under key themes and has informed the final design. The responses are under Documents - Community Feedback to the right of screen.

Schedule

  • Civil works awarded to contractors. Construction program to be finalised once the contract has been awarded. Consultation with the school to ensure minimising disruption as much as possible.
  • Play items and landscaping to follow. This work will be undertaken by Council’s in-house crew. Installation schedule to be finalised once the civil works has been completed.

Funding

Funding for this project is provided by the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program [Phase 3].

    Rheecec asked 4 months ago

Rheecec, thank you for your interest in this project and taking the time to ask a question and provide feedback on the new Eastwood play space. All feedback is important and helps us to make informed decisions on this project and future projects.

The Eastwood Play Space was designed by landscape architect firm, Fitzgerald Frisby Landscape Architecture in compliance with AS4685 (Safety requirements for permanently installed public playgrounds).

Council engaged a consultant to undertake a separate safety in design workshop, and it was determined that the playground slides were deliberately facing away from the afternoon sun to minimise the heat on all the play equipment including the slides. This is not to say that the slides don’t heat up, but every attempt was made to make the equipment as play friendly as possible.

Lack of shade is a frequent complaint received by Council as it undertakes many projects which provide community facilities for recreation. Shade has been provided to the park in the form of a large shelter installed over the BBQ area, however provision of further shade has not been planned at this time due to budget constraints.

Your feedback has been noted. We encourage your continued interest in this project and invite you to follow the project on YourSay to receive updates directly to your inbox when important information is available, including construction commencement of the new toilet facilities.

    Warm regards,

    Sally
