The project involves the construction of a large shed at the Bairnsdale Transfer Station which will act as a Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) for the public to drop off an extensive range of materials for diversion from landfill. This is intended to improve local capability for the processing of materials through increased feedstock availability.

The works will include the installation of a range of new infrastructure. This infrastructure will enable a significant increase in not only the number of waste streams which are collected on-site for recycling but also an increase in the volumes of waste streams which are currently collected.

Project Objectives:

The key objectives of this project are to increase the total volume of material recycled through the Bairnsdale Transfer Station. The focus of this increase will be on priority materials as identified by the Regional Recycling Fund. The recycling centre to be constructed under this project will provide for convenient disposal of paper/cardboard, plastics and mixed recycling in an environment separate from our transfer bin area. This physical separation is intended to reduce the instance of recyclable material being disposed of to landfill in a mixed load of residual waste. Furthermore, this project will also enable some primary processing of this material in the form of shredding and Baling which will improve transport efficiency and commodity value.

The collection of number of non-priority streams will also be increased through this project. Tyers, Scrap Metal, batteries, paint, motor oil, polystyrene and mattresses will be collected in the new recycling centre with scope for shredding and baling to also be performed.

This project includes:

  • The construction of 25m x 35m RCC shed and associated roads
  • Purchase and installation of Tyre Rim Removal, Baling and Shredding infrastructure
  • Modification of site roads as required (widening)
  • Closure of existing RCC and installation of waste processing plant

Budget:

This project has been funded through DELWP – Regional Recycling Fund Stream - Round 1 with contributions from East Gippsland Shire Council.
