The McKean Street pedestrian crossings are complete.

The new pedestrian crossings and footpaths now provide a safer environment for Bairnsdale Secondary College students travelling to and from school.

Additional safety measures including tactile markers and Disability Discrimination Act1992 (DDA) compliant footpath crossings offer significant benefits to individuals with restricted mobility, making the area more inclusive for all.

The McKean Street, Bairnsdale road safety improvements are complete.

About the Project

Two pedestrian crossings are planned for installation on McKean Street to enhance safety for pedestrians whilst also providing multiple advantages to the community and the local environment.

The installation of formalised pedestrian crossings will improve the overall safety for pedestrians by raising driver awareness, encouraging them to slow down and be more cautious. The crossings will also benefit individuals with limited mobility, making the area more accessible to everyone, and assist to manage and control traffic, ensuring smoother flow and reducing congestion during peak school hours.

Complementing the new pedestrian crossings, additional safety measures are being planned for bus loop road. This includes black pedestrian fencing, warning tactile markers installed as per DDA requirements, chevron line marking and a raised pedestrian crossing with associated line marking.

These additional safety measures will encourage walking and cycling to school, increasing physical activity and reducing car emissions - benefiting both health and the environment.

Objective and scope

The main objective of the project is to improve safety for pedestrians and students accessing Bairnsdale Secondary College.

Works scheduled to be undertaken in this project include:

  • Construction of pedestrian crossings.
  • Upgrade to existing footpaths and construction of new footpaths, where required.
  • Installation of additional kerb and channel.

Consultation and community engagement

Discussions with Bairnsdale Secondary College identified concerns for students accessing the school safely. These discussions informed the development of the design plans. Council will be continuing to liaise with the Secondary College throughout the project.

Funding for this project is provided by East Gippsland Shire Council.
