About the project
The old Mallacoota Skate Park was constructed of prefabricated steel ramps on a concrete slab, typical of early 1990s designs. It did not meet current industry standards and some of the park components were deteriorating and rusting, exposing sharp edges and dangerous corners. It also suffered from drainage issues, which cause slippery surfaces and pooling water (which also harbours mosquitos).
There was little shade, which meant the exposed steel sections were very hot in summer and the metal was noisy, creating noise pollution problems for neighbours and local businesses.
The new skate park for Mallacoota comes after a devastating bushfire and the impact of COVID-19. Local organisations, individuals and businesses came together as a result to support the town’s recovery by investing in infrastructure that lifts community spirit.
The Sanctuary (Mallacoota Youth Group) and Mallacoota Halls and Rec (Committee of Management), with support from the Mallacoota and District Recovery Association and Mallacoota Lions Club were successful in securing funding for the new skate park through the Bendigo Bank.
The Mallacoota Skate Park will provide a vibrant family hub for all ages to enjoy. It will be a space to play, teach and learn, through active recreation and social inclusion.
Concept
The new design boasts flowing transition and street areas, including half-pipes, handrails, quarter pipes, a spine (quarter pipes placed back to back) and more, as well as shady gardens and landscaping. The striking design is in the form of an abalone shell broken on the rocky shores of Mallacoota. The design has a stronger focus on skaters and scooter riders, but BMXers will still enjoy the ride.
Feedback
Through the funding and targeted community consultation a concept report was produced that developed the existing Mallacoota Skate Park site as identified within the Mallacoota Youth Group project brief. It incorporateed ideas generated by the community, to create an informed conceptual design for the much loved youth recreation space in Mallacoota.
The report explains the approach and principles that were utilised to create this comprehensive design response. It outlines the development of the design process and how this has responded to the client and community feedback. This has built a strong project vision resulting in a well informed final concept design.
The design explores opportunities and possibilities for the holistic integration of an active youth recreation precinct with landscape amenity, increased youth activation, supporting infrastructure, circulation and access. The construction for the Skatepark is set to be completed during 2023.
VISION
“To create a multi-use skate and family space for all ages to enjoy. A space to play, teach and learn, through active recreation and social inclusion.
A vibrant hub designed with the community, for the community.”
