FAQs
What is the vision for the skatepark?
To create a multi-use skate and family space for all ages to enjoy. A space to play, teach and learn, through active recreation and social inclusion. A vibrant hub designed with the community; for the community.
What is the current skatepark made from?
The current Mallacoota Skatepark is a prefabricated steel ramp on concrete slab design.
Why is the skatepark being redesigned?
The existing skatepark is manufactured from prefabricated steel and doesn’t meet current industry standards. The steel ramps have aged significantly with large amounts of rust appearing on the surface. It can be assumed that the same amount of deterioration is occurring to the frame with the features reaching the end of their life cycle, which will eventually make them unsafe.
Who are the target user group?
The community feedback has highlighted skateboarders as the majority of users. However, the preliminary design caters to all user groups including those participating in BMXing, scooter, roller skating and all other active wheeled sport disciplines, as well as those non active participants looking to spectate or hang out within the space.
What consultation has been undertaken so far?
During the concept design development stage, there were two rounds of consultation, which comprised of up to three community workshops/sessions – one at the Mallacoota P12 school; one with the Sanctuary Mallacoota Youth Group and a whole of community event.
The format for the sessions was a presentation of the initial consultation findings, the design process to date, design theming and eventually the draft concept, attendees completed questionnaires and took part in discussion of the project.
Attendance was made up of a strong presence of daily users that were interested in the technical / functional aspects of the Concept Design.
The preliminary design was developed by Baseplate using the concept design and consulted via the Project Control Group (made up of EGSC, Halls & Rec, Sanctuary, Lions Club and local skateboarders). The preliminary design is currently on display (Your Say Page) for comment.
What is the theme of the preliminary design?
The dynamic and engaging concept defines the skate space and creates an iconic and active destination for the community. The skate park ideas were generated from conversations with the residents and skate park users of Mallacoota.
The abalone shell theme that was developed in community consultation sessions has been retained in the 2.4m high quarter pipe element and intends to utilize local artists to paint. The abalone shell represents not only the industry Mallacoota was built on, but also the unique natural environment that it is a part of. The natural shell forms of the abalone are directly translated into skate forms.
What level of skill is it intended to be used by?
The design of the park was created for all ages and the levels of skills and experience. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
Who produced the concept and preliminary designs?
A company called Convic produced the concept design and undertook the community consultation (www.convic.com)
Baseplate (www.baseplate.com.au) are undertaking the detailed design.
What is the next step?
Once detailed design is complete we will go out to tender for the construction of the skate park.
When will the project be completed?
It is hoped that construction can commence in mid 2022 and be completed prior to the end of 2022.
