Project Update 30/03/2023

Works are progressing well with all concrete works now complete. The surrounding disturbed areas have been hydroseeded, and the Grillex Shelter will be installed this week.

We are hoping to have the Skatepark open for public use late next week, although some areas surrounding the Park will remaining fenced off until the grass can establish.

The park looks amazing and is already well received by the community. An opening celebration will be held later in 2023, more details to come.

The old Mallacoota Skate Park was constructed of prefabricated steel ramps on a concrete slab, typical of early 1990s designs. It did not meet current industry standards and some of the park components were deteriorating and rusting, exposing sharp edges and dangerous corners. It also suffered from drainage issues, which caused slippery surfaces and pooling water (which also harboured mosquitos).

There was little shade, which meant the exposed steel sections were very hot in summer and the metal was noisy, creating noise pollution problems for neighbours and local businesses.

The Sanctuary (Mallacoota Youth Group) and Mallacoota Halls and Rec (Committee of Management), with support from the Mallacoota and District Recovery Association and Mallacoota Lions Club were successful in securing funding for the new skate park through the Bendigo Bank.

The Mallacoota Skate Park will provide a vibrant family hub for all ages to enjoy. It will be a space to play, teach and learn, through active recreation and social inclusion.
