Project Overview

The Cann River community is currently serviced by a landfill approximately 2.4 kms West of the township. The exact opening date of the current site is unknown, but is believed to be some time in the early 1960’s. The landfill is very near to reaching its capacity limit with an estimated closure date in the second half of 2023.

Over the past 10 years East Gippsland Shire has closed and rehabilitated more than 10 landfills and, in many cases, replaced them with Transfer Stations on the same site. This has created several issues with subsidence and integrity of the building surface. EPA guidelines have also undergone significant changes in recent years with the 2021 introduction of the updated Environment Protection Act. As such EPA now recommends against construction of any type on top of rehabilitated landfills.

The new Waste Transfer Station will operate differently from the current Cann River site, whereby all waste will be collected on site within large containers and transferred to the Bairnsdale landfill or recycling centres for sorting.

Recognising the importance of this project for the community and our environment, Council will continue to work with the community to ensure appropriate waste infrastructure can be secured. This will include a review of previously nominated locations and potential alternative arrangements. Following this work – it is likely that an amended planning permit application for the establishment of a waste transfer station facility will be submitted.

Community consultation and project update

Council held in person information sessions in Cann River on Wednesday 6 October 2022, with representatives available to help answer questions and listen to feedback. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared feedback.

We have listened and heard concerns from the Cann Valley community about the development of the Transfer Station at Gauge Track off Tamboon Road. After consulting with the community Council will consider alternative options for waste management solutions in Cann Valley. Responses to feedback and questions from these sessions is available in the Documents section to the right of this page.

Council is continuing to consult with the community to further explore options for future waste and recycling services. Please check the Your Say project page and your community newsletter for updates. Also, make sure you subscribe to the project to receive emails with updates.
