About the Project

The Swifts Creek township is the service, commercial and social hub for residents living north of Ensay and south of Omeo. Swifts Creek is also the medical, education, shopping, and rural supply hub for many communities that surround the Swifts Creek area.

Like many rural communities, sport and recreation plays a critical role in bringing our community together and helps maintain their physical and mental health wellness. The Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve Committee of Management knows that the recreation reserve is a critical asset for Swifts Creek and surrounding communities in keeping people of all ages and abilities socially and physically connected.

We also recognise that an active and well-connected community is more able to work together particularly during times of natural disasters such as bushfire events. Our community knows that the recreation reserve is a critical staging space and facility in such events.

Swifts Creek needs fit for purpose community facilities at a recreation reserve that is adaptable and can offer a wide range of positive social and recreational opportunities. Our current facilities are struggling to meet community requirements, visitor expectations and are not helping us build on our resilience and capacity into the future.

The Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve Upgrade project aims to provide fit for purpose sporting and recreation facilities. It will incorporate two key project stages:

  • One component is the replacement of three existing buildings (changerooms, umpire rooms, toilets, tennis clubroom, social rooms) with one multipurpose, accessible and fully compliant facility.
  • The second component is the replacement of the existing netball and tennis court facility with a new competition compliant facility.

Further updates will be provided on YourSay following the Council Election on 26 October 2024, and the questions/feedback tab will be reinstated.

From 12.00 noon Tuesday 17 September until 6.00 pm on Saturday 26 October (Election Day) we will be in the Local Government Election Period (also known as Caretaker Period).

During this time, we will limit our printed communications, website content, social media activity, and community consultations. The ability for people to comment on our social media content will also be disabled during the Election Period.

Each of these steps is to ensure our content does not affect voting in the election and is consistent with steps taken by other Victorian Councils and the Local Government Act 2020.

These changes are only temporary; we'll be back to normal communication activity after the election.

We are pleased to advise that the contract for construction of the Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve Upgrade was awarded to Design Co Builders at the 10 September 2024 Council meeting. This was the last major contract for construction for this term of Council.

Works will involve replacing the existing buildings (changerooms, umpire rooms, toilets, tennis clubroom) with one multipurpose community pavilion which will be accessible and fully compliant to meet netball and AFL sporting body guidelines.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved in achieving this significant milestone and we look forward to working with the Design Co team to enrich community with upgraded facilities that ensure community connectedness, exceed visitor expectations, and assist in building resilience and capacity into the future.

The upgrade of the netball/tennis courts at the Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve has been completed.

Two new competition compliant acrylic netball/tennis courts are now available for competition and training.

New lighting has also been installed to meet the Netball and Tennis Australian Standards for competitive play/training (minimum 250 lux).

A third court has been laid with instant kikuyu turf to provide a safe area for children to play within an enclosed area.

The upgrade of these facilities supports the local community's physical and mental well-being through enabling people to participate in physical activity, and contributes to reconnecting as a community in the structured environment of organised team sports.
