Council has allocated funding to commence concept and detailed design works for the upgrade of Shaving Point Park, Metung.

Shaving Point is a vital location to the function and leisure of the Metung community and is primarily used as a drop in point for boat users, ferry access across Lake King, and as a destination for pedestrians. As Shaving Point has limited available space, additional infrastructure options are limited. Council recently improved amenities at nearby Paterson Park and Back Beach to complement the upcoming proposed works at Shaving Point.

Objective and Scope

The primary objective is to improve and enhance Shaving Point and consider the needs of all users.

  • Formalising boat parking and car parking
  • Improving the boat trailer turnaround, reversing area and traffic flow
  • Enhancing the park area immediately adjacent to the boat ramp
  • Upgrade of the existing toilet block

Funding has been allocated to commence concept and detailed design works. Construction is subject to future funding applications.

Consultation and Community Engagement

The upgrade of Shaving Point was a common theme in a Council conducted community survey a few years ago which sought to determine what infrastructure Metung residents would like to see improved.

Council is now seeking feedback from the wider community to inform the basis of a concept design.

Surveyors have been engaged to map the existing conditions and recently performed geotechnical site design investigations using a small drill rig to assess Shaving Point for the proposed future upgrade. On completion of the survey mapping task, the concept plan will be prepared informed by community feedback and survey reports.

Detailed design will be completed following feedback on the concept plan.

The concept and detailed design work for the upgrade of Shaving Point Park is a separate project to the Shaving Point Boat Ramp Upgrade. To read more on the Shaving Point Boat Ramp Upgrade, click here.

Feedback - Metung - Shaving Point Park Upgrade

We want to know what you think about the upgrade of Shaving Point Park.

Please take 5 minutes to tell us what is important to you, what issues you think need addressing, and what you like about Shaving Point Park.  Your feedback is important and will be considered as we progress with this project.

East Gippsland Shire Council is limited in the community engagement it can undertake during the Council Election Period, 17 September 2024 to 26 October 2024. Further updates will be provided following the Council Election on 26 October 2024 and the questions/feedback tab will be reinstated.

The Shaving Point Park is very tired and is an important feature of Metung and the Gippsland Lakes due to its prominent position. I am pleased a upgrade is planned.
There was a recent high rise, high density residential development planned at 2 Metung Road which adjoins the park and would have had a very detrimental impact. That plan appears to have been withdrawn but if further application is made it is important that it should be low scale in terms of height, site density and visual impact on the amenity of this important site.
