Our review of the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange (EGLE) – which had the goal of finding the best ways to support our local farming community, both now and into the future – is now complete, with the exchange remaining under the current operating set up.

We heard a strong message – people value local ownership and control, and a facility that continues to deliver tangible benefits to the local farming community.

An independent review found the current model remains the best option for our region’s premier saleyard, with strong support from farmers, agents and the wider livestock industry.

We’ll now focus on practical improvements and long-term planning to make sure the Livestock Exchange continues supporting East Gippsland’s livestock industry well into the future.




Project background

The East Gippsland Livestock Exchange Commercial Review emerged as part of our continual improvement process, which delivers a constant evaluation of all services and commercial businesses in East Gippsland to address current and forecasted shifts in industry operations trends.

Recognising the importance of staying current with evolving industry norms and ensuring organisational efficiency, the decision to conduct a commercial review was made to look at the best operating model for our facility, which ensures the facility continues to meet the needs of East Gippsland’s agricultural sector in an effective and cost-efficient manner.

Our purpose is to identify a strategic pathway for Council and determine the optimal business structure for managing the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange.

We are not considering selling the saleyards.

The review will assess saleyard operations at a local, regional, and national level, along with livestock movements, and provide detailed recommendations with all findings to be presented to Council for consideration before action can be taken. This will cover an overview of the current in-house business model, forecast performance of the facility and best practice management options.

Our focus continues to remain on what is best for the livestock industry, local vendors and buyers, and ratepayers.

We thank the agricultural community for taking the time to have a say on the preferred operating model of the saleyards.

Expert consultant AEC Group produced a commercial review report of the saleyards. Read the Executive Summary here. This report was informed by consultations with key stakeholders, including livestock agents and staff. Additionally, community consultations took place from February to March 2025, providing valuable insights.

    Survey | Livestock Exchange Commercial Review

    Your feedback matters and we want to hear from you.

    The local agriculture sector will have the opportunity to have its say on the operating model for the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange (saleyards). 

    We started a commercial review of the saleyards in March 2024, as part of our continual improvement process.

    Please take 5 minutes to complete our survey after reviewing the executive summary report here.

    We are not selling the saleyards. The aim of the review is to present Council with options for the most effective operating model for the facility and in consideration of the following key objectives:

    • To ensure the business delivers the best outcome for the farming community
    • To ensure the business is managed to a high industry standard
    • To ensure the business is financially sustainable for the future

    The survey is open from Monday 10 March to Sunday 6 April 2025. 

    This survey includes general questions about the participant (i.e. gender, postcode, and age) to give an indication of the audience reached.
