In 2022, we carried out an audit of fifteen sports fields across East Gippsland to evaluate the current electrical and floodlighting systems. Several facilities were marked as priorities for upgrades, including the oval at the Swan Reach Recreation Reserve.

The audit suggested enhancing the lighting at Swan Reach oval (including the poles) to meet the recommended Australian Standards, and to minimise excessive glare currently affecting players, nearby roads, and properties.

Your feedback is important and will be used to support our funding application for the lighting upgrades to Sport and Recreation Victoria 2025-26 Country Football and Netball Program in July 2025.

Enhancing our football and netball facilities will bolster our rural lifestyle and ensure the ongoing viability of country football and netball into the future.

Objective and scope

Upgrading the current oval lighting will improve facility capacity and participant safety. New LED lighting will permit lighting standards are met and result in energy efficiency.

The proposed works, subject to funding include:

  • Dismantling and removal of existing lighting infrastructure including concrete poles.
  • Installation of new steel light poles and energy efficient LED light fittings to provide a safer playing environment and reduce the glare to nearby properties.

Consultation and community engagement

Your feedback is important and will be used to support our funding application.

We remain committed to working with the Swan Reach community to improve local sporting facilities and support safe, inclusive participation in recreation and sport.

While our funding application to the 2025โ€“26 Country Football Netball Program was not successful, this does not mark the end of the Swan Reach Oval Lighting Project.

Our team is now actively preparing the project for reโ€‘submission in the 2026โ€“27 Country Football Netball Program, with applications due by 26 February 2026.

The proposed lighting upgrades are intended to enhance player and spectator safety, extend usability of the oval, and support the ongoing growth and sustainability of local sport. Community feedback has helped to strengthen the application and give it the best possible chance of success.

    What happens next

    • The project will be submitted to the 2026โ€“27 funding round in February 2026
    • Funding outcomes are expected to be announced from July 2026

We appreciate our communityโ€™s patience and ongoing support and will continue to advocate for improved facilities for Swan Reach.
