This project is the second stage of the Raymond Island Ferry Park Upgrade and Koala Trail and Discovery Experience.

Council contractors will upgrade Seventh Parade by formalising the existing gravel car parking with kerb and channel and associated drainage and convert Seventh Parade to a one-way street to provide safer access for vehicles and pedestrians.

Activities within this project will improve the park amenities for residents and visitors, and further enhance the ‘gateway’ to the koala visitor experience on Raymond Island.

Objective and scope

This project will deliver:

  • Improved vehicle and pedestrian safety
  • Replacement of the old post-and-rail fencing with new bollards
  • Upgrade of the current gravel car parking on Seventh Parade,
  • A raised pedestrian crossing

Converting Seventh Parade to a one-way street will improve pedestrian and vehicle safety.

Consultation and community engagement

Thank you to everyone who participated in the community consultation for the Ferry Park Upgrade on Raymond Island in August/September 2022. Feedback from the survey responses and in-person sessions to discuss the ideas on the initial concept plan has informed the development of the final concept plan.

We have responded to your feedback to let you know the reasons behind the decisions made and why or why not certain aspects can or can’t be included. For a full summary of the feedback received please view the What You Told Us report.

Proposed road and drainage upgrades on Raymond Island.

It is well known that Raymond Island has many drainage 'problem areas' which are currently being addressed through regular maintenance.

The existing infrastructure is aged, leading to localised inundation across the island. Council plan to undertake a wholistic approach with prioritisation of the main drainage elements for further detailed design and drainage upgrades.

We will soon commence data collection, survey, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, flood mapping, water quality, preliminary ecological assessment, high level concept design and costings for drainage upgrade.

On 30 August 2024, Stantec Australia was awarded the contract to deliver high level concept design for drainage upgrade, an important first step towards improved drainage outcomes for all.

As such, we have decided to pause the proposed project at Seventh Parade to concentrate on tackling the underlying drainage issues before applying upgrades to certain areas.

We would like to thank those who provided feedback during the initial consultation phase, and we appreciate your understanding as we seek to improve drainage across Raymond Island.

This project has not yet been programmed for construction and will be submitted for budget funding once the detailed design and associated construction costs are finalised.

Should you have any questions, please call 03 5153 9500 or email feedback@egipps.vic.gov.au

We welcome your continued interest in this project. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the design phase and future construction plans.

As part of the Koala Trail and Discovery Experience there has been works undertaken to the gardens and the landscaping to improve the ‘gateway’ within Ferry Park reserve.

These works will be finalised over the following weeks and will carrying out the below:

    • Install steel edging between lawn and garden
    • Aerate existing lawn and top dress with blended lawn soil
    • Rejuvenate existing gardens through pruning and weed control
    • Add new plants to replace dead ones and as required
    • Apply appropriate fertilizer
    • Spread mulch
    • New garden area created around large rock on the west end of the BBQ Shelter
    • New garden area created from spoil piles on the east end of the BBQ shelter.

The new plants will be drought tolerant and will keep with the characteristics of the Ferry Park and build on the current environment.

Also, as part of the trail extension works there will be additional gravel paths created with the road reserve of Fifth Parade and also providing connection from Third Parade to Eighth Avenue, this will provide safer access for people and help to reduce the pedestrian traffic from the road.
