The Lochiel Park Lighting upgrade was celebrated at an official opening event held on 18 July 2024 for recently completed sporting facility upgrades in Bairnsdale.
The new light towers and LED lights make it easier for teams to train and play for extended periods. The project was supported by $225,039 from Sports and Recreation Victoria, $72,452 from Council, and $4545 from the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club.
The opening event was well-attended despite the chilly wet weather. A special thanks to Tom McIntosh MP for attending and dedicating these upgrades to our community.

About the Project:

East Gippsland Shire Council together with the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club have secured funding through Sport and Recreation Victoria for the replacement of the aged and inefficient lighting at Lochiel Park.

The works will include installation of new lighting infrastructure around the football oval, which includes new light towers and LED lights to satisfy the current AFL Victoria Preferred Facilities Guidelines.

The proposed outcome of the Lochiel Park Lighting Upgrade is to:

  • Increase participation rates and user groups.
  • It will allow the oval to be ultilised for longer periods and with more flexibility during the week
  • Increased opportunity for training and playing of both the senior and junior sides.
  • Maximise the usage of the oval/facility by giving increased availability of times and extra oval space that can be used safely throughout the season
  • In winter months areas of the oval can become worn and muddy and the ability to move training sessions around the oval assists in maintaining a good and safe playing surface.

Budget:

This project has been primarily funded through Sports and Recreation Victoria with contributions from East Gippsland Shire Council and Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club.

The certification of the Illuminance (lux) levels was received in January 2024, marking the completion of the project works.

Upgrading to compliant LED lights has allowed the grounds to be used for longer periods and with more flexibility and opportunity for training and playing games.

Council is proud to deliver this project for the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club and the Orbost community, made possible with funding provided by Sports and Recreation Victoria 2022 LSIF Community Sports Lighting Stream, East Gippsland Shire Council, and the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club.

Out with the old, and in with the new!

The upgrade of the oval lighting at Lochiel Park is nearing completion, with the new light poles and light fittings now installed.

Council's contractors, W.R Jones Electrical Pty Ltd extended electrical cabling to the four new lighting pole locations, and 5-metre-deep footings were dug to accept the lighting footing poles.

A laser was mounted to the top of the lights and aimed at a temporary target in the centre of the oval to position the light poles in the exact position to achieve the desired minimum average of 100 lux light level.

The new lights will provide the oval with compliant energy efficient LED lighting to meet the current AFL Victoria Preferred Facilities Guidelines, increase participation rates, and allow the oval to be ultilised for longer periods and with more flexibility during the week.

We are another step closer to improving the lighting at Lochiel Park oval to extend the hours of its usage.

Light poles have been delivered and the footings will be dug as soon as the weather allows. The light poles will be installed following Building Surveyor approval of the footing holes. The existing lights will remain in place until the new light poles are installed and operational.

The Lochiel Park Orbost Lighting project has started with the electrical contractor installing electrical cables to pits in the new lighting pole location.

The existing lights remain in place and are only removed after the new light poles are installed and operational.

This method of leaving the existing lights does not impact on the current use of the oval.
