Due to impacts associated with COVID-19 restrictions, along with the discovery of several structural and building integrity issues, Council is experiencing delays to the expected completion dates of this project.

We are fortunate to have a great team of contractors who have extensive expertise in historical conservation works and have provided the necessary knowledge and guidance to conserve the building's historical integrity.

With all structural components on both buildings now assessed, the full extent of issues appears evident, with works and timeframes to rectify issues currently being revised.

About the project

Council is pleased to have secured funding for conservation and protection works to the historically significant Omeo Justice Precinct courthouse buildings. The Old Courthouse was built in 1859 and the new Courthouse built in 1893. The project is jointly funded by Heritage Victoria and Council.

The works to be undertaken to the Old Courthouse building include repair to the brickwork, brick render repairs, extensive painting both internally and externally, repair to flooring and plastering, sub-floor ventilation, stormwater works and electrical upgrade.

Works to the new Courthouse include repairs to flooring, replacement of sub-floor timber framing, floor ventilation, roof repairs, tiling and painting, electrical upgrade works and some minor repairs to furniture.

To minimise the upcoming winter weather impact, works are currently focusing on external works to both buildings.

Works to the Omeo Heritage Precinct will provide significant improvement to the condition and ensure the preservation of these historic buildings.
