About The Project

Improvements are being planned for Myer Street (and service roads) in Lakes Entrance. This project will help improve traffic and pedestrian safety by improving intersecting roads and service roads, and informal traffic movements between the service roads and Myer Street grassed medians. The proposed improvements will also address parking issues around Lakes Entrance Primary School and the shortage of pedestrian connections along Myer Street.

Objective and Scope

Safety improvements will focus on Myer Street and service roads between Roadknight Street and Coates Road, including Lambert Street. Kerb and channel is proposed to be constructed to improve drainage and additional footpath crossings will improve pedestrian safety. It is also proposed that the service roads will be formalised with dedicated entry and exit points between the service roads and Myer Street.

Consultation and Community Engagement

Consultation with Lakes Entrance Primary School led to the development of an initial concept plan. Council began community consultation in March 2023 and invited feedback on the initial concept plan to gain an understanding of community needs, and the interaction between road users along Myer Street and the residential streets abutting Lakes Entrance Primary School.

Feedback has led to the development the concept plan. Informed by what we have heard, the following changes have been made to the initial concept designs:

  • Several footpaths will be reviewed for upgrading to 1800mm widths to align with the Disability Act. Where possible, shared paths will be investigated.
  • The grassed areas between the service roads and Myer Street will have kerb and posts installed to prevent cars from parking on there.
  • No change to access for either Silver Sands Caravan Park (33 Myer Street) or Sunnyside Caravan Park (60 Myer Street)
  • Lambert Street will remain two-way with additional parking being investigated along Lambert Street. Whilst angled parking is recommended, other parking options will be further explored.

Schedule

This project has been allocated construction funding in the draft budget. Construction is currently scheduled for FY23/24 and FY24/25, pending adoption of the budget on 27 June 2023.

The start of construction is anticipated to commence 2023-24 (pending grant funding). Council will take a staged approach to construction to reduce disruption as much as possible. We will work closely with businesses, residents, and the appointed contractors to ensure any impact to business is kept to a minimum.

We welcome your continued interest in this project; updates will be provided in the tab below.

Safety upgrades and functionality improvements to Myer Street in Lakes Entrance are set to commence mid-July 2024.

Key upgrades include a revamped school crossing to bolster safety for students attending the Lakes Entrance Primary School, as well as residents and visitors to the area. The installation of new pathway connections and wider footpaths extending along both sides of Myer Street, from Roadnight Street and Church Street in the south to Coates Road in the north, will provide ample room for parents and guardians accompanying children to school and accommodate strollers and mobility aids fostering inclusivity through improved accessibility for everyone.

In response to community feedback and to cater to the evolving needs of the Lakes Entrance Primary School and the local community, road improvements will include raised asphalt platforms to streamline traffic flow and improve accessibility. Additional works include the installation of new kerb and channel, drainage upgrades, and the construction of concrete hardstands. The project also includes minor landscaping works to improve the overall appearance and appeal of the area.

Notable traffic changes include new entry and exit points for the service road on the Primary School side of Myer Street to provide additional safety for all road users.

The contract for the construction of these upgrades was awarded to Whelans Group Investments Pty Ltd (Whelans) at the 21 May 2024 Council Meeting, following a comprehensive publicly advertised tender process. Whelans is a local Gippsland company which brings years of experience and commitment in achieving exceptional outcomes, as demonstrated by their recent accomplishment in completing the Bullock Island Masterplan project.

Construction will be staged to minimise disruptions to the Primary School, local businesses, and visitors to the area, with anticipated completion before the busy 2024 festive season.

Funding for this project is provided by the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, and East Gippsland Shire Council.

We are extremely grateful to the Lakes Entrance Primary School for their collaboration and support. Together, we are committed to creating a safer and more vibrant environment for students and community members alike.
