To improve the functionality, aesthetics and operation of Maurice Avenue as identified in the Mallacoota Structure Plan 2007 and Masterplan.
It is also being upgraded as identified by the Mallacoota and District Recovery Association (MADRA) in order to play a key role in the Disaster Recovery Plan and contribute majorly to commercial and touristic activities.
Which part of Maurice Ave is being upgraded?
From where it intersects with Allan Drive to the roundabout.
Who is funding the project?
The budget for this project is provided through the Australian Government's Regional Recovery Program and East Gippsland Shire Council’s capital works budget 2021/22.
Will the existing large trees be retained?
The concept designs were developed as initial talking points for community consultation. Key stakeholder engagement (via the Project Reference Group) has indicated the preference to keep the large native trees and garden feel.
When will construction start?
The contract for construction of the Mallacoota Streetscape upgrade was awarded to Whelans Group Investments Pty Ltd (Whelans) at the 21 May 2024 Council meeting.
Possession of site was granted to Whelans on 1 July 2024.
Construction is anticipated to commence mid-July 2024.
Has council consulted with the community on this project?
Community consultation commenced with a Concept Ideas document available for review, and an online survey open for feedback.
Council collaborated with the Mallacoota and District Recovery Association (MADRA) and Mallacoota and District Business and Tourism Association (MDBTA) to establish a Project Reference Group (PRG) made up of representatives from key stakeholder groups within Mallacoota.
The PRG and Maurice Ave businesses have established key needs for the project that were used to establish a brief for the concept design work. The PRG has continued to provide a representative viewpoint on the design options and is included in communications of detailed design. Reference Group members contribute their knowledge about issues that are relevant to the project and provide representation for a variety of stakeholder interests.
Who is on the Project Reference Group?
The Project Reference Group has a representative from each of the following organisations/interest groups:
Will businesses be impacted when construction works commence?
East Gippsland Shire Council will work closely with businesses and the appointed contractors to ensure any impact to business is kept to a minimum.
Will car parks be removed in the design?
The intent of the design is not to reduce the number of car parks accessible to Maurice Ave.
