We are progressing the design for drainage upgrades within the Lanes Road precinct to improve stormwater management and address long‑standing flooding issues in Lucknow.

This project aims to improve drainage efficiency, reduce localised flooding, strengthen long‑term resilience for the growing community, and help to treat runoff before it enters the Gippsland Lakes.

Works include a new drainage basin at the rear of the Lucknow Recreation Reserve (replacing the existing basin) and underground drainage to connect the new basin to the existing drain to the east.

The new basin will be finished with aquatic plants and walking tracks like the wetland on the corner of Princes Highway and Phillips Lane.

A drainage strategy and initial concept plan were prepared as part of the East Bairnsdale/Lucknow Precinct Structure Plan in 2012.

We are working with specialist engineers to identify a feasible, effective and compliant drainage solution. The design is being developed in line with best practice stormwater standards, climate change considerations, and all relevant planning and environmental requirements.

Given the technical and regulatory nature of the project, our engagement focus is on providing clear, factual and timely information to residents and landowners.

Construction of the drainage upgrade is subject to future Council budget allocation.

    Status: Concept Design Progressing

    What’s happened so far

We have been preparing the groundwork needed to develop a detailed and technically robust drainage design. Key steps have included:

    • A design contract has been awarded following a public tender process.
    • Early investigations have begun, including planning for non‑destructive digging (NDD), borehole testing and survey work. This will help confirm ground conditions and existing infrastructure locations.
    • We are coordinating with the Park Lanes developer and associated consultants to secure survey and geotechnical information required for the design.
    • Review of site history and previous stormwater studies to support the design brief and procurement.

    What’s happening next

    Investigation works will continue, including:

    • On‑site NDD and borehole testing to gather important underground information.
    • Survey work to map existing conditions.
    • Ongoing contact with landowners, developers and technical consultants.

We will provide updates as design work progresses.
