Why is council undertaking this project?
This project will support Bruthen’s transition from a timber-town to a tourism hub and important gateway to far-east Gippsland and beyond. The works will facilitate new investment and growth in the town, generate jobs and support the continued population growth in the areas immediately surrounding the town. The improvements will enhance the functionality of the main street and improving public spaces to bring more people to local businesses, and encouraging visitors and travelers to ‘stop, stay and spend’.
Who is funding the project?
The total budget for the project is $1.5 million – With contributions of $1.01 million provided by The Victorian Government through the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions and $490,000 from East Gippsland Shire Council’s capital works budget 2021/22
Will any trees be removed within the Main street?
Council will endeavor to protect and maintain the existing Elm Trees. Modifications to existing gardens will take place with some being removed or rejuvenated.
When will construction start?
The start date of the construction has not been determined yet as East Gippsland Shire Council is still only at concept stage of the project.
Has council consulted with the community on this project?
East Gippsland Shire Council undertook a workshop consultation on the project in early November 2020 with residents and businesses along the main street. Since then, Council has established a reference group and undertaken community consultation in August 2021 with an online survey and in person sessions held.

Will businesses be impacted when construction works commence?
East Gippsland Shire Council will work closely with businesses and the appointed contractors to ensure any impact to business is kept to a minimum.
Who will be doing the work?
At this stage, no tenders have been let for the project, but the works will be undertaken by contractors managed through East Gippsland Shire Council’s procurement processes.
