Public toilets are a vital part of creating inclusive, accessible, and welcoming public spaces for everyone in our community. Whether you're enjoying a local park, attending a community event, or travelling through our towns, access to clean and safe public amenities supports health, dignity, and participation – especially for families, older adults, people with disabilities, and visitors.

The need for public toilet facilities in Dejarlais Park was identified by our community – and we listened.

The proposed amenities will be located close to the town centre, ensuring they are visible and easily accessible. They are designed to support a wide range of park users, including families enjoying the playground and BBQ areas, as well as attendees of community functions and events held in the park.

We invest in public toilet infrastructure to enhance the usability of public spaces, encourage tourism, support local businesses, and promote active lifestyles. These facilities are planned with community input and designed to meet current and future needs, ensuring they are functional, environmentally sustainable, and respectful of the character of each location.

Objective and scope

The purpose of this project is to enhance public amenities in Dejarlais Park, improving the experience for both local residents and visitors to the town. The new toilet facility will support a range of recreational activities – both active and passive – and complement nearby community assets including the Neighbourhood House and the proposed Benambra Men’s Shed.

Proposed works include:

  • Design and installation of a two-cubicle toilet facility, featuring one ambulant cubicle and one accessible cubicle with baby change facilities
  • Construction of accessible pathways and connections to ensure safe and inclusive access to the amenity

Consultation and community engagement

This project originally formed part of the broader Benambra Streetscape Improvements initiative. However, following strong community feedback, we have redirected resources to prioritise the installation of new public toilet facilities in Dejarlais Park.

The first round of community engagement invited the community to share ideas, preferences and suggestions for the external design of the toilet block, including cladding, colour themes and overall character – within the scope of the project budget. This helped us to develop a proposed design that we think reflects the suggestions presented at the community BBQ on 17 September 2025, as well as from surveys received.

This project is funded by East Gippsland Shire Council.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to review the concept design and share feedback on the proposed upgrade of the Benambra Dejarlais Park toilet facilities.

We did not receive any further community feedback during the December exhibition period. We are now progressing with finalising the design in-house.

Construction of the new facility will be carried out by our Works team.

A further update will be provided on YourSay once construction has been scheduled.

Thank you for your interest in this project.

    We’ve been listening

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback on ideas for the Dejarlais Park public toilet facility and came along to the community BBQ on 17th September. Your input has been most helpful.

    What’s next?

In response to what we heard from the community, we’ve developed a concept plan that we think meets the community suggestions put forward based on a similar look to the nearby bus stop and features:

    • A rustic modern look
    • Pitched roof
    • Low rock wall

As part of finalising the concept plan however, we are seeking your further feedback to ensure the facility truly represents the character of the Benambra community. We invite you to view the concept and help us finalise choices for the external treatment of the toilet block β€” including cladding material and colour.

The draft concept and location plan can be viewed below, and in the document section:

Please provide feedback by filling in a new survey or download a new survey hardcopy and return the completed form to a friendly team member at our Customer Information Centres, Benambra Neighbourhood House, or email to feedback@egipps.vic.gov.au

All comments, ideas and suggestions will be carefully considered and used to inform the final design.

    Feedback closes: 5pm, 19 December 2025.
