Bairnsdale - Francis Street and Pyke Street roundabout
New road infrastructure is being designed to address longstanding concerns about pedestrian and cyclist safety at the intersection of Francis Street and Pyke Street in Bairnsdale.
Through this project, we aspire to build our capacity to create transformative road safety measures and implement evidence-based solutions to ensure our streets are safer for everyone.
Objective and scope
A new roundabout is planned at this intersection. Given that the focus of this project revolves around Safe Local Streets, priority will be given to the movement of pedestrians and cyclists through the roundabout with the installation of raised crossings. Installing this type of treatment will increase the visibility of vulnerable road users.
The roundabout is being designed for 12.5m single truck, with a mountable apron for 19m semi-trailers.
We anticipate detailed design to be completed by October 2025 and construction to occur from July 2026 to early 2027.
Consultation and community engagement
Feedback from the East Gippsland Shire Council's Local Road Safety Group identified concerns about pedestrian and cyclist safety at major intersections.
This project will be the first of its type in East Gippsland, in line with recent installs in other Victorian municipalities, such as Torquay, and will ultimately contribute to shaping a safer future for our community.

Funding
Funding has been provided by the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
The Department of Transport and Planning, in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission, developed the Safe Local Roads and Streets program to support the development and delivery of road safety infrastructure projects on local roads. This $200 million program is designed to integrate local governments’ priorities with a Safe System approach.
