What is the West Bairnsdale Oval Redevelopment all about?
In 2018, Council undertook a strategic assessment to identify the needs of sporting clubs and groups. This project resulted in the endorsement of the Bairnsdale Sporting Facilities Plan which was endorsed by Council in September 2018.
This long-term plan recommended a suite of facility upgrades, further strategy development and opportunistic club development all to be explored, designed and delivered over a 15-year period. The West Bairnsdale Oval Redevelopment Concept Plan is the next identified priority on the list.
We will develop a concept design for future implementation of works that will enhance the amenities at the West Bairnsdale Oval.
Community feedback will inform the design and ensure the reserve meets the needs of today’s local clubs, schools, families and the wider community, now and into the future.
Once developed, the concept design will be used to support future funding applications, detailed design work, and delivery planning.
Construction will depend on Council priorities and available funding.
Why are we asking for community feedback?
Your insights help us understand how the oval is used, what you value, and what opportunities you see for improvement. Community input also helps us confirm which parts of the 2018 plan still work well and what needs a fresh look.
What can the community influence?
There’s plenty you can help shape, including:
What parts of the project can’t be changed?
A few elements are already set, such as the physical boundaries of the reserve, the broad direction established in the 2018 plan, the project budget, and Council policy requirements.
Who’s being consulted?
We’re engaging directly with sporting clubs and associations, schools, and user groups. We also want to hear from neighbours, residents, casual park users, and the wider community through YourSay.
What happens next?
We’ll bring together all feedback in an engagement report to help guide the new Concept Design. Once the design is finalised, it will support future funding applications, inform detailed design work, and help plan the delivery of improvements.
Will the environment and trees be considered?
Yes. Environmental considerations include tree retention, new planting, shade provision and improving the overall natural feel of the reserve.
Who is delivering the project?
The project is being delivered by East Gippsland Shire Council in partnership with GroupGSA and Simon Leisure.
What happens after the concept design is finished?
The concept design will guide future funding applications, detailed design work, staging and delivery planning. Implementation will depend on Council priorities and available funding.
