Council has been requested by some local Orbost community members to seek Recreational Vehicle (RV) Friendly accreditation for Orbost. RV Friendly accreditation can be a significant step in promoting RV tourism.
RV Friendly is an initiative of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Limited (CMCA).
RV refers to all recreational vehicles. This includes motorhomes, caravans, campervans and camper trailers. This does not include tent camping.
The criteria for accreditation are as follows:
RV Friendly essential criteria:
Provision of appropriate parking within the town centre, with access to a general shopping area for groceries and fresh produce.
Provision of short-term, low cost overnight parking (24/48 hours) for self-contained recreational vehicles, as close as possible to the CBD.
Access to potable water.
Access to a free dump point at an appropriate location.
RV Friendly desirable criteria:
Provision of long term parking for self-contained recreational vehicles.
Access to medical facilities or an appropriate emergency service.
Access to a pharmacy or a procedure to obtain pharmaceutical products.
Visitor Information Centre (VIC) with appropriate parking facilities.
VIC to provide a town map showing essential facilities, such as short- and long-term parking areas, dump point and potable water.
RV Friendly Town™ signs to be erected within the town precinct.
Typically RVs are self-contained and accreditation only requires facilities for such self-contained vehicles rather than camping more generally.
Orbost meets or can readily meet many of the criteria. One of the key area that would require resolution is provision of a free or low cost overnight stay area for around ten RVs within a reasonable distance (couple of kilometers) of the CBD.
RV Friendly accreditation and the establishment of a free or low-cost camping area needs to be considered in light of the existing caravan park in Orbost. The existing caravan park lease concludes later in the year at which point Council would expect a new expression of interest for a new lease process will be undertaken.
