This project is now complete.

The Newmerella Roadside Rest Area improvements have revitalised the visitor rest-stop and gateway to the Rail Trail. The redevelopment of the rest area adjacent to the Princes Highway at Newmerella has provided more defined and safer access for heavy vehicle operators and the travelling public through improvement of traffic management, surfacing and drainage works.

The scope of the works include:

  • Kerb and channel installation works for safe movement of heavy vehicles and general traffic
  • Road pavement repair 
  • Asphalt resurfacing
  • Formalisation of five heavy vehicle parking pays 
  • line marking and signage.
  • Installation of drainage pits and pipes
  • Renewal of road signage

Picnic tables and chairs are on order, with expected delivery scheduled around October 2023.


Copies of the information sheet and concept plans are still available at the Orbost Service Centre - 1 Ruskin Street, Orbost.

    Works are complete. Finishing off the area will be picnic tables and chairs - these are on order and we expect to install them in approximately October.

    Construction of the Newmerella roadside rest area is progressing well.
    Boxing for the splitter island on the western entrance, internal footpaths, and the splitter island on
    the eastern entrance has been prepared ready for concrete pouring.
    The existing road pavement has been removed and will be replace with asphalt.

    Kerb and channel construction has commenced at the eastern end of the rest area and the road leading to the Pony Club ground.
