The localised widening of Rules Road in Lake Tyers aims to enhance the safety, functionality, and appearance of the entrance road to the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust (LTAT) community.
This initiative is an essential step towards upgrading the infrastructure at the community's entry point and preparing for future improvements to the iconic overhead boomerang structure.
Project objective & scope
Enhancing safety and accessibility: Modifying and widening the entrance road to meet modern road safety standards, addressing existing unsafe road conditions, and improving accessibility for all users.
Supporting future infrastructure upgrades: Ensuring the road meets safety compliance standards required for a future funding application to replace the overhead boomerang structure, which has surpassed its structural life.
Revitalising the entry point: Creating a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing entry point to foster a sense of pride for the LTAT community.
Community engagement
In 2023, the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust received a grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) to replace the deteriorated boomerang structure at the entry point. However, the grant did not cover associated roadworks required to meet current safety standards.
In consultation with the DPC, we secured funding through the Municipal and Essential Services funding arrangement, which supports the maintenance of LTAT roads and infrastructure. This project will address critical road safety upgrades, enabling the LTAT to reapply for funding to install the new boomerang structure once these foundational works are completed.
Funding
Funding for this project has been provided by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) through the Municipal and Essential Services funding arrangement, with project delivery overseen by East Gippsland Shire Council.
