FAQs
Why is Council revitalising Nicholson Street Mall?
Nicholson Street Mall is an important community space in the heart of Bairnsdale. The project will explore ways to improve how the space functions, enhance accessibility and safety, and support a vibrant and welcoming town centre.
What changes are being proposed?
No final design has been developed. The project is currently focused on understanding community needs, investigating opportunities and identifying options that could improve the precinct over time.
Has Council made any decisions about the future design of the mall?
No. The project is in its early stages, and no decisions have been made about the final design or future layout of the space.
What works are happening now?
Early works are planned within the mall, including the removal of the existing public toilet building and relocation of the taxi rank. These works will help prepare the area for future revitalisation opportunities.
Why are the public toilets being removed?
The existing toilet building has reached the end of its useful life and its removal will create opportunities for future improvements within the precinct. Alternative public toilet facilities remain available nearby.
The public toilet has been closed since March 2026 to support community safety.
Will the mall remain open during the works?
We will work to minimise disruption wherever possible and provide updates about any temporary access changes before short-term work commence.
How will local businesses be considered?
Supporting local businesses is an important consideration for the project. Council will continue to engage with businesses and stakeholders throughout the planning process to understand potential impacts and opportunities.
How can I have a say?
Community feedback is welcome. You can complete the survey, participate in future engagement activities and sign up for updates to stay informed.
Will there be future consultation opportunities?
Yes. As the project progresses and options are developed, there will be further opportunities for the community to provide feedback and help shape the future of the precinct.
How will Council use community feedback?
Feedback will be considered alongside technical investigations, strategic planning, accessibility requirements and stakeholder input to help inform future recommendations and decisions.
Why is Council asking for feedback about taxi services?
Understanding how people currently use taxis and what they need from future taxi services will help Council identify relocation options that are safe, accessible and convenient for the community.
When will the current taxi rank be removed?
Removing the taxi rank from the eastern end of the Nicholson Street Mall will only occur after a decision on a preferred alternative has been reached.
How will accessibility needs be considered?
Accessibility is a key consideration for the project. Feedback from people with disability, older residents, carers and other community members will help inform future taxi pick-up and drop-off arrangements.
