Bairnsdale - Airport Upgrades
Consultation has concluded
Work is underway at Bairnsdale Airport to replace the site’s ageing water mains.
East Gippsland Shire Council, which owns the airport, identified the water main project as a priority in its Bairnsdale Airport Masterplan. The infrastructure was installed in the time of World War II and has now reached its end of life.
The water main replacement is funded by a grant from the Department of Infrastructure’s Regional Airports Program (Round 2), with Council contributing the remainder.
There will be minimal disruption to airside aviation traffic. The project is expected to be completed before this April’s East Gippsland Field Days, which are held at the aerodrome.
The water main upgrade will complement a range of projects that will enable the facility to attract a wider range of aircraft. Council was recently advised it had secured a grant from the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program to extend and strengthen the airport’s primary runway.
The runway project is also a key priority of the Masterplan. The upgraded runway will accommodate larger and heavier aircraft, including Air Ambulance Victoria patient transfers and commercial passenger services, creating new tourism, freight and professional service opportunities that rely on air travel.
Runway Upgrade
Project Information
Federal funding has been approved for the extension, widening and strengthening of the main runway at Bairnsdale Airport.
Local Bairnsdale company Crossco is progressing with the design, assisted by Greg White, airport pavement specialist.
Geotechnical investigation and preliminary pavement design was completed prior to the funding application.
Next Steps
The on-site vegetation assessment is due to commence shortly with the design stage expected for completion by the end of June 2022.
Construction planning has also commenced with staging of the works being thought through carefully.
Preliminary discussions have occurred with representatives of Air Ambulance Victoria and Fire bomber pilots to advise of potential disruptions and changes tro the landings at the airport during the times of the works.
Wellington Shire aerodrome team have also offered to share their learnings from the West Sale runway project and their input will be very valuable.
In the meantime we will also continue planning further components of the Bairnsdale Airport masterplan. The next stage of design will focus on the upgrade of the taxiway and apron. This is expected to be ready for funding opportunities in next financial year.
